archive exhibition thelightyoudidntknowabout

it is an open project that tells how, throughout history, artists, architects, and designers have faced, studied, and often solved the relationship between natural and artificial light. the exhibition, which will be continuously enriched, will become a great archive of universal light available to all students and designers who wish to learn from the works and projects of the great masters.

to learn how to design and write the light of the future, one must study and understand knowledge and techniques, but above all the work and experience of past designers. the timeline that begins with the birth of humanity and reaches the present day is divided into six major periods: starting from vitruvius, we will discover all the inventions and innovations that humans have developed over the centuries in search of a good light.

the exhibition path collects and connects works, projects, sketches, photographs, models, and unique thoughts born to respond to specific design needs and challenges. many of these projects were conceived for special architectures and contexts, and have never been included in industrial production or official catalogues, too often remaining preserved only in the private archives of great masters.

the exhibition will be unique in its kind and will grow over time with new contributions and materials, in a continuous process of expansion and deepening, from which the manuals of light will take shape.

students, architects, designers, and writers of light will thus be able to access a direct and authentic source of knowledge and inspiration. they will be able to observe how an idea is born, how a form evolves, and how an intuition becomes a concrete project, but above all, how a dream can become reality.

thelighyoudon’tknow is conceived as the beginning of a love correspondence between art and life, between light and thought, between necessity and imagination. to design, verb to love is the engine that moves every gesture of the writer of light, where designing is a form of love toward the world, toward ourselves, and toward others. artis sola domina necessitas—necessity is the sole mistress of art. according to this belief, the universal designer responds to design challenges with solutions that unite functionality, knowledge, creativity, and art.

thelighyoudon’tknow is an exhibition project, a great archive, but also a laboratory of research and innovation.
